P.K: Do ppl get aroused by the current global madness?
U.J: I am not sure about that and its hard to speak for other people how they feel. Speaking about myself i am sometimes inspired and sometimes paralysed. The lockdowns of the Covid 19 crisis are giving me a lot of time to concentrate on my work with no distraction and a lot of joy. On the other hand is the world now sometimes a pretty lonely place.
P.K Is the idea everything or nothing if it cannot be manifested into an artwork?
U.J: There are a lot of ideas which cannot manifested into an art work for example certain philosophical or scientific ideas. Art is an aesthetic language of its own and manifests ideas in a high compexity which cannot be described or explained with spoken language fully.
P.K: How do you reconcile an idea and the moment that grabs you, with the making of a piece of work? I.e. Starting a new piece and laboring to make it, killing the spontaneity/freshness of the idea?
U.J: Sometimes I have an „idea“ and i start to realize this idea. But sometimes the works kind of realizes themselves with a little help by me. That sounds pretty strange but is a bit like that. I have a material storage and i buy a lot of stuff at flea markets or interesting shops. At my studio i play with these materials and things until something emerges. The process doesn`t kill a fresh idea but it comes to life through the process of playing.
P.K: Do you think the label "emerging artist" is kind of bullshit? Can you give us some interesting anecdotes about what it's like to be emerging? Like an art caterpillar to butterfly or whatever.
U.J: Emerging is always good, like the phoenix rising from the ashes. We have to do that as artists all the time after something is completed and we want to start start new work. I think the term "emerging artist" is market related, In this context it may make sense but for me personally it doesn`t have significance.
P.K Does art choose the artist or the artist choose the art?
U.J:Art cannot choose i guess and if the artist is an artist he/she already chose the art. The question if anyone can choose anything is a very hard one and leads us directly to the big question of free will. I think today neuroscience and neurophilosophy have a lot of interesting things to say about this.
